What is the difference between an interior designer and architecture and interior design? While architecture certainly covers a large part of the architectural field, an interior designer only really touches on architectural details. While there is a lot of overlap between both interior designers and architecture, there are also a few key differences between these careers:
Architectural Designers and Interior Designers: Educational Requirements to Become an Interior Designer Education is a relatively minor requirement for this career. To get into an architectural program for architecture, a bachelor’s degree is required along with a number of other design credits. Typically, a bachelor’s degree in business, architecture, or related degrees is desired as a minimum requirement. Although the educational requirements for this career are similar to those of many architects, an architectural program is somewhat more competitive due to the fact that it is a fast-paced career and is not often a career path someone can jump to from just being a bachelor’s degree holder. There are several universities and colleges offering architecture and industrial design programs online as well.
There is no minimum GPA requirement to enter into any of the architecture or industrial design graduate programs. Most programs require that you have a bachelor’s degree before considering you an acceptable candidate for admission. For the Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering degree, a GPA requirement of 2.5 is preferred.
What is a Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural Engineering? A Bachelor’s degree is necessary for entry into any architecture or industrial design program. This is a four year program that requires study in the following areas: civil and structural engineering, building and structure science, mathematics, environmental planning, and graphic design. There is generally a strong emphasis in the courses of mathematics, physics, and chemistry that cover architectural matters. You will need a minimum GPA of 3.0 in order to successfully complete your bachelor’s degree. If you are unable to meet these requirements, most programs will admit you but will likely require that you take an examination to certify your candidacy for admission.
What is an Associate’s Degree in Architecture and Industrial Design? In the past, the only way to become an interior architect or an industrial designer was to be a member of either the Institute of Engineers or the Royal Institute of Architects. These schools offered accredited degrees that would qualify you to work as architects or industrial designers. Now, architecture and industrial design programs exist at community colleges and technical/trade schools. However, these programs require that you have already completed all of your general education requirements. In most cases, an existing structure is sufficient for you to begin your studies with an architecture or industrial design program.
Is it Possible to Become an Interior Designer or an Architect Without Specialization? Absolutely. Many times, many of the interior designers and architects that you see in magazines and on television work within a larger firm that serves as a creative agency. Although this is one of the best ways to go about designing a space, it does not mean that you cannot also achieve a successful career as an interior designer and/or architect.
Does Education Needed to Be Multidisciplinary? No. Although many think that a Bachelor’s degree in architecture and interior design will require that you pursue a multi-disciplinary curriculum, this is not always the case. Almost every school that I have worked at for over three decades has required that all of their graduating students complete a four-year bachelor’s degree in architecture and interior design as well as a year of study at a technical college or technical university.
Can You Study Online? Of course you can! With technology on the rise, more architecture and interior design students are turning to the internet to learn everything that they need to know in order to become successful in their chosen career. In fact, many architecture and interior design schools are now offering online programs, and some even offer complete online programs. By taking an online architecture and interior design course, you will be able to sit down at your desk in the morning, and in just a matter of days, you will be able to complete your degree and find employment that is waiting for you!
